This past weekend, on June 1st, 2024 I competed in another Strongman Competition. I took 3rd place in my division, and I’m very happy with that result.
My training block leading up to the competition prepared me well, however after competing again I also was able to reflect and identify the areas I need to work on. I’m not a natural athlete myself, so I really need to work on the transitioning between the sandbags, carries, etc. I tend to move a tiny bit slower then the other competitors. I excelled in the events that were based more on pure strength, like the barbell press ladder, deadlift, and farmers holds. Even in BJJ, when I’m on the mat, I move much more technically and methodically with power rather than fast and with speed. I think that’s my weakness. For example, my setup for each sandbag pick was, on average, about 2 seconds longer than everyone else’s. And the reality is, that’s 1-3 more reps (depending) that I could’ve gotten.
This is my YouTube video of 4 of the events. I excluded the Farmers Hold video because… well, it’s just me standing there. And that doesn’t necessarily need to be in a video. It’s also unlisted so, you’ll only see this video here on my page!
Going forward, I’m very excited to be competing here again in just 6 weeks. I’ve made some small adjustments to my training block and I’m really just polishing the techniques for each event for my next show. The reality is, I’m not really going to get *that* much stronger in 6 weeks. But, I can work on my technique for all 4 of the events in the next competition. I’m also competing again in September, in a Natural Stones only competition. I found a place nearby me that does Natural Stone training, and hosts 3 events every summer. The person with the most points between all 3 events is dubbed “Appalachia’s Strongest Man.” My goal: by 2026, I’d like to earn that title within their organization.
