Competed in another Strongman Competition this weekend on July 24th. Overall, I’m satisfied with my performance and results. However, I have to say this competition really threw me for a loop.

Going into this competition, I read through the numbers and I expected it to be the typical Strongman format, heavier implement = higher scoring than the lower implement, etc. Turns out, this competition was run very differently. In this one, each weight was set for each weight class.

I went into this competition planning to go for the heaviest log for 1 or 2 reps at 200, and I had to end up doing the 160lb log for reps instead of the one or two heavy ones that I prepared for. The same thing happened with the Deadlift event, where my gameplan was 405 for 12-15… and I ended up having to do 325, which I pulled for 21 reps. And to be honest, even though obviously my cardio took a hit, I very much just ran out of time because I had a could more reps in the tank.

I also only had 1 other guy in my division, and he ended up beating me by 1 second in the farmers carry, and 1 rep on the log press. However, I did still win the deadlift event. So because of this I took 2nd place. Which, not that I really care a ton about medals and all that but, I am still very prideful that I won the deadlift because that really is my specialty.

Overall, despite having to change up my game plan last minute, I still was very proud of my performance and give a ton of props to the other competitor in the division. Going in expecting to do heavier weights, for lower reps, then being forced to do the lighter weights for actual high reps, I just wasn’t prepared for that level of endurance, I was much more prepared for… well, being Strong.

Also my belt broke off during the Log Press event. The Velcro broke off during my first rep and the, widget or whatever it’s called came loose and the belt slowly fell down each more as I did each rep. But, I pushed through and ended up hitting 9 reps on 160. Which, is right about where I’m sitting at in turns of reps. My PR on 165 is actually 9 so, I think it’s about fair I’d still hit 9 on 160. Even though I’ve never actually tried 160 for reps, just 165, as that’s my normal jump when working up to heavier sets.

Overall, it was very cool that I got to compete at the weightlifting hall of fame, and I’m excited for my natural stones only competition in September!
